March 16, 2018 - Womens Road Race Cancelled -
We are sorry to have to announce that we have taken the decision to CANCEL the Bristol South Womens Road Race on Sunday 18th. We have discussed the matter with the British Cycling commissaire assigned to the race and he fully supports our decision.
This decision has not been taken lightly as we are all keen to support womens racing in the area. Unfortunately it looks as though we are going to be hit by some extremely cold weather over the weekend, with a significant chance of snow. The mendips is an exposed place and even if it does not snow it will be bitterly cold up there.

February 8, 2018 - BSCC Monthly Segment Competition -
After a slow start, it was great to see 28 riders take on the January Segment. Jo Knight was first up. The fastest times were set by (our champion) Ned Beavis, and (great to see a newcomer to the ladies competition) Alice Thomson. Ned (aka Ben) has chosen next month\'s - he's gone for
Tower House Lane
As always, I hope that the bonhomie of participation will outweigh any concerns about speed of flight - it was great to see some new names on the board in January, so hope you all persist! If you are going to set a time, please ride solo (no drafting) and go safely. If you meet oncoming traffic on the lane, please act responsibly and suck up the delay!
December 5, 2017 - Charity Ride -
Huge thanks to all that rode, volunteered, fundraised or donated on Sunday.
The total raised for the MS Society is now touching £1000 with a few more donations still to come in.
A great show of support put on by the club - fantastic stuff.
As promised, and only intended as a bit of fun, the Strava-based results of the 11 hill climb segments are now in -
looks like Robert Campbell and 'Ariana' are our Mens and Ladies champions - but lots of different riders put in great times on individual segments.
5 of us rode all the segments (or, at least, recorded Strava times on all 11)
joining me were Alistair James, Luke Smith, Rob Campbell and Seb Kleb.
Thanks again to all-
See you in January when the monthly segment competition will kick off all over again!
November 12, 2017 - Uphill Downhill 2017 -

November 2, 2017 - strava update -
October's winner is Ned Beavis. He was the first rider too - 13 subsequent climbers never really threatened his very impressive time.
Chris Chapman has kindly chosen the last segment of the year:
Long Cross Hill - https://www.strava.com/segments/3741312
Please put the year's charity ride in your diaries for 3rd December. We've had some classic segments
this year - and this is your chance to ride them all in one day in aid of a good cause.
I'd be delighted if you could sell some raffle tickets for the charity; raise some sponsorship; or offer to lead one of the 4 rides planned for that day.
Please email me if you might be tempted to volunteer - otherwise, i really hope you'll come on the Charity Ride, whatever the weather! :-)
If you want to set up a fundraising page, please see; justgiving
October 3, 2017 - Strava Update -
John Bailey's September segment was a relatively gradual one, with a short downhill stretch... but whatever gradients are thrown up, Ned Beavis seems to keep coming up trumps with the fastest time. And Claire Greenfield picked up another ladies win. Any ladies up to the challenge of preventing her clean sweep?
Chris was first rider, minutes before Niall and 17 members rode in total.
September 3, 2017 - 100 moist miles -
In rather damp and miserable conditions in the Welsh National 100 Champs in South Wales today Josh Griffiths set a new junior 100 mile club record. Boy Wonder knocked 15 minutes off his old record to record a 3.51.17 at 26mph.
September 2, 2017 - Strava Comp - Aug. -
|Well done to Ned Beavis and Claire Greenfield who registered the fastest times (men / women) for Daniel Kempe's August Segment.
17 members rode the climb, Stephen Canavan was first rider (a long time ago it seems now!).|
Full results attached (and we're trying to get them up on the BSCC Website too)
John Bailey's September segment, Dial Hill, is already open for business.
August 21, 2017 - Josh Griffiths joins 30mph club -
Super junior Josh Griffiths became only the second club member to join the 30mph club with a club record breaking 25 mile ride in South Wales on Sunday.
17 year old Josh shaved 3 seconds from the senior record set by Paul Jones in 2014 to lower it to a remarkable 49:55.
Griffiths senior is a little annoyed that his boy has now gone quicker than him over 25 miles.
Josh training for his attempt at joining the 30mph club only 3 years ago.
August 14, 2017 - Quick kid in Wales -
Josh Griffiths put in another rapid ride in the Pontypool Welsh 10 mile champs on Sunday to claim the Welsh Junior Champ title. His 20.13 was also a club 10 mile junior record which had stood for 30 years.
July 3, 2017 - July Strava Update -
Congratulations to Adam Whitehead - who left it late in the month, then unleashed an unbelievable time up Phil Darby's segment to take June's crown.
Claire Greenfield flew the ladies flag;
Carl Pollard was first rider.
Full results attached- "Ned Beavis" (aka Ben) is still top of the Points Table.
Christina Gyles has kindly chosen July's segment by Upton Cheyney.
June 28, 2017 - Interclub results -
Hi Folks,
Despite the damp weather, there were several riders who improved on their best times.
The full results are HERE; glory to the South.
Rob, please pass on our regards to those in SAS for coming along this evening.
A rematch required as you see fit…
See you around.
June 19, 2017 - Strava Update -
What amazing weather... make the most of it and have a go at Phil Darby's June Segment out of Pensford.
Joe Hawksworth has taken the KOM with a 3.19 - but always nice to see BSCC riders have a go... whether to compete, or just to complete. Carl Pollard won the bonus for first rider - you've got a fortnight left to join him.
June 1, 2017 - June Strava -
Phil Darby has kindly chosen June's segment:
it's got a little chicane mid-way so please go carefully. To those early morning risers, apologies for the late notice... but the segment is now "open"!
April 30, 2017 - monthly segment competition news -
32 members rode "Chew Hill" in April.
"Ned Beavis" just beating debutant Joe Norledge, and he is now top overall
(full listings, see BSCC Googlegroup)
Claire Greenfield was the fastest lady.
Charlie Pope was first rider.
"Chris ." (our reigning champion) has kindly chosen May's segment.
He's gone for Dyrham Hill:
A bit further out than usual - hopefully you'll all make the effort to get out to it!
April 24, 2017 - BSCC 25 winners -
|At the club 25 mile champs on Sunday near Didmarton, Nicki Carr (VC Equipe - Flix) won the womens event in 1.06.59, taking home the Arthur Justin Cup. Mark Diesel Hudson (BSCC) won the mens event in a 58.04 earning a new home for the biggest trophy we have, the Charles Glenister cup.
March 16, 2017 - March Strava Update -
13 members have already ridden Claire's March segment - https://www.strava.com/segments/1148185. Lavinia Paternoster is challenging Claire for fastest lady - and I've set a 4:24 for the men to beat.
Now the spring is here, make the most of the blue skies and given the segment a go - it's a rolling climb rather than a savage one.... (go fast, but please go safe, and go solo for this competition)
March 10, 2017 - Mendip Madness -
|Sunday sees the first of our biannual pilgrimages to the hills of the Mendips.
There are 3 groups:
Fast group - Mike - 8:30
Intermediate group - Christina - 8:00
Shorter intermediate group - Claire - 8:30
March 1, 2017 - Strava Comp. update -
We've been running this competition a few years now... today has been the first time Strava has let us down with a server outage on the last day of the month.
So... results below/attached have to be considered as provisional for now.
But barring late rides, "Ned Beavis" registered the fastest time of the month. I'll refresh results when the website is back on line.
In fact, anyone that got themselves up that steep hill in all the awful weather we've had, deserves credit.
28 members climbed Tim's nomination of Woollard Lane. Andy and Jo were first riders (again!)
Great to see 6 ladies registering times - Claire Greenfield the quickest of them.
Claire also has kindly nominated Failand Lane for March (the climb up to Lower Failand)
Go safely on this narrow road
Go solo, no drafting for this competition....
and remember to smile!
February 14, 2017 - Strava Comp. update -
well done to the 12 members who have given Tim's segment a go (despite pretty cold conditions). They'll have found a steady start, which actually flattens out, before kicking pretty savagely at the end. Andy and Jo were first up (in the rain on 1st Feb) - still 2 weeks to give it a go.
Go carefully on those muddy lanes surrounding - try and beat Niall's time!
January 25, 2017 - Cyclo-Cross Results -
Thanks to all racers, helpers and spectators for turning out for our second Western League cyclocross race at Mendips Raceway last Sunday. No mud meant for a fast, flowing course, and no fog meant everyone could see the course!

January 16, 2017 - January Segment update -
|14 members have ridden Romney Avenue - the January Segment. I've set you all a 3:17 to beat. Jo and Andy were first riders of the month (and year!). It's a steady grind- please resist any temptations to draft behind another rider though (this is against the spirit of this solo competition!) - a fortnight left for you to give it a go!

CYCLOCROSS DATE CHANGE
This Sunday’s Western League cyclocross race at Mendips Raceway has been postponed and will take place on Sunday 22 January instead. More info: https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/events/details/152340/Mendips-Cross-/-Western-League-Round-16

December 5, 2016 - Charity Ride review -
Well done and thank you to all the riders who rode yesterday's charity ride.
Over £1000 raised, and counting. Full times/results and raffle winners are on the BSCC GoogleGroup now. Have a good Christmas break all - see you at one minute past midnight for January's opening segment of 2017!
November 17, 2016 - YIAD ride 2016 -
On 4th December, in place of the normal club run, Bristol South will be doing its annual charity ride
This year, we will be raising money for the MS Society.
We're encouraging all members to either:
1) take part in the ride. It'll only cost £5 (and this includes cake, coffee and a raffle ticket!)
2) make a donation – however modest - https://www.justgiving.com/companyteams/YIAD2016
3) raise sponsorship yourself – using your own JustGiving page linked to the above
The proposed route links each of the club's “Strava Monthly Challenge” segments into a single ride. We'll be tackling 11 of the hardest climbs in Bristol, 75+ miles of riding and 5,000+ feet of climbing, so it'll be a long, hard day even before you factor in December's weather. Hopefully our efforts will inspire some good sponsorship.
If the full route (https://ridewithgps.com/routes/17635779) sounds too tough, there will also be a shorter ~50 mile route on the day (more typical of a normal Sunday Club Run), as well as the monthly “Intro Ride” catering for newcomers/beginners. There should be something for everyone, so we're hoping for as many participants as possible.
Last year we raised over £4,000 – so let’s pull together as a club and try and beat that in 2016!
November 16, 2016 - November segment update -
20 members have already ridden Luke Smith's November segment. Let's try and beat our record of 32?
Its a toughie for sure... there's no easy way up Dundry
Phil Troughton has recorded an exceptional time at 8:01
Claire Greenfield is the fastest lady.
And Matthew Barber was first rider.
I'd like to take this opportunity to again publicise the BSCC Charity Ride on 4th December. Hope you'll come and take part come rain or shine.... if not, perhaps make a modest donation to the excellent cause?

October 23, 2016 - BSCC Hill Climb -
Tejvan Pettinger (Sri Chinmoy Cycling Team) marked a welcome return from injury by winning Bristol South CC’s hill climb at Burrington Combe on Sunday. The 2013 National Hill Climb champion clocked 7.17.6 in cold conditions to put 12 seconds into his nearest rival Isaac Mundy (Oxford University CC), who finished the climb in 7.29.8
Up and coming local rider Rob ‘The Pencil’ Borek (DRK Racing) clocked 7.53.3 for third.
Joanne Jago (Performance Cycles CC) clocked 9.21.6 to successfully defend her title against Fiona Redding (Radeon-Bike Science RT) who stopped the clock at 9.33.4

October 16, 2016 - October Segment Update -
Half way through the month and 17 members have already ridden the Hallen Climb.
James Stevens and Jo Knight have the KOM/QOM times to aim at. The overall fastest time would seem to be just about within reach...?
Good to see some new members having a try- a fortnight left for you to register a time. href=https://www.strava.com/segments/5374160
September 20, 2016 - Strava Comp. update -
13 members have ridden Wellsway so far.
Andy Legge and Jo Knight have the fastest times (men and women).
Martyn Eves was first rider on the 1st.
Give the segment a go over the next fortnight - its a kinder gradient than we sometimes have... and even includes a tiny bit of descending.
Please ride it both safely (and solo) for the competition.
Guys- remember its your best 6 monthly scores that add up to your overall total - so still time to make your move!
September 17, 2016 - New 30 mile records set across the board -
On a brisk day in South Wales the 30 mile record fell in the junior, senior, ladies and team.
Jo Knight lowered her record by 29s to set it at 1:17:43
Andy Legge took the senior record off of Andy Griffiths with a 1:04:37
It only stood for 30 minutes until super junior Josh Griffiths finished smashing it with a 1:03:15 to hold both the junior and senior record.
Andy and Josh were helped by Mark Bradley who carded an impressive 1:05:26 to set the new team record of 3:13:18 lowering it by nearly 15 minutes.
Keeping it in the family Griffiths and Legge junior took the team record off of Griffiths and Legge senior.
Daniel Kempe took nearly 5 minutes off his pb to record a 1:07:06.
September 11, 2016 - another week, another record -
In a display of youthful power, newly 17 year old Josh Griffiths smashed nearly 3 minutes off his 25 junior record to lower it to a very impressive 51:06.
Next in his sights are Griffiths seniors 50:28 and club record of 49:58 held by Paul Jones.
September 5, 2016 - 100 mile record for Griffiths -
Josh Griffiths put in another fantastic ride in the Welsh CA 100 on Sunday to break the 52 year old 100 mile club junior record previously held by Allen Janes. In a well paced ride Josh took a shade over 40 minutes off the old record of 4:44:44 to set it at 4:04:29.
In a nice touch Allen was on the finish line waiting to see his record go and was pleased to see it finally go after over 50 years.
In what has been a brilliant year of progression, Griffiths junior now holds the club junior record at 25, 50 and 100 miles, and he still has 2 years as a junior. He has a chance to have a crack at Griffiths seniors 30 mile record of 1:05:12 in a few weeks.
August 8, 2016 - Smasher Griffiths does it again -
Josh Griffiths set yet another new club junior record, this time at 50 miles, in tough conditions in Wales. He took nearly 6 minutes off the old 50 mile record to lower it to a very impressive 1:56:24
Chapeau young man, chapeau.
Griffiths senior was very relieved that his boy did not beat his best but we think the relief will be short lived!
August 1, 2016 - Ladies and Junior Records go again! -
BSCC sent a strong showing of 7 riders to the West London CA 30 hoping to claim some records at a distance that isn’t run very often.
Jo Knight was the only one who managed to lower her existing ladies record after she took 54s off it to set it at 1:18:12.
The Old Testers of the South of Bradley, Kempe and Legge missed out on the men’s team record by 7 seconds. Kempe getting caught by a mobility scooter using a pelican crossing certainly didn’t help.
Josh Griffiths continued his ever improving season by taking 1m19s off his previous 25 mile record to lower the bar to a sprinters 53 of a 53:54 in the Bynea CC event on the Welsh Mountain
July 25, 2016 - New 25 Team Club Record -
|The old testers of the South of Bradley, Kempe and Legge set a new 25 mile team club record of 2.40.30 on a soggy day in the Welsh Valleys.
With 2 of the 3 being over 50 it did not slow them down as all set new PBs in the event too. Bradley (51) 53.10, Kempe (50) 54.07, Legge (40) 53.13.
July 17, 2016 - Junior 25 record smashed -
|On a windy day at Usk Josh Griffiths usurped the old men of the South to set a new 25 mile junior club record of 55:13! We are sure it will be first of many to fall to the younger Griffiths.

Chris has set a fighting good time to aim at. Its a good little segment- steep at the start, scenic at the top.
May 17, 2016 - Strava Comp -
The sun has come out, and 16 members have ridden Daniel's May Segment. It's not as steep as some, but long enough so that the ramp at the end does bite. Alex Mellor has set a 4:06 to aim at. Pls ride it fast, ride it safe & ride it solo (and smile!)
May 12, 2016 - Fred Whitton Challenge -
On Sunday I took part in the Fred Whitton Challenge and I am very happy to say that I managed a PB and cycled 9/10 pikes and passes, only being defeated by the steepest sections of Hardknotts Pass, a 30% climb 95 miles in (I was in a bit of a bad way by this point!).
Having loaded my jersey pockets with everything one could need for the Lake District’s unpredictable weather, we were blessed with sunshine all day – in fact, if anything, it was a little too hot, but I wasnt going to complain!
Thank you all for your support, words of encouragement (mostly) and generous sponsorship. I think I have managed to thank most people personally, but some donations were anonymous.
For anyone still wanting to make a donation I believe the page will remain open for a couple of weeks https://www.justgiving.com/agirlandabicycle2016.

April 7, 2016 - Bristol South Road Race 13 March 2016 -
8 laps of the Stowey Hill Circuit - 55 miles
The race was set off in cool but sunny weather with a full field of 80 riders. The first time up Stowey club was neutralised, with the race starting shortly before joining back onto the A37.
As soon as the flag dropped there was a flurry of activity with a rider from Radeon-Bike Science RT quickly opening a sizable gap over the rest of the field that was held for some time. There was also moves that saw from Matt Franklin (Bristol Road Club ) and Steve Cottington (Bath CC) up the road early on, with Matt holding a sizable gap for some time and allowing him to take some key KOM points.
The next big move came on lap 5 with Steve Thomas (Dream Cycling) and Kieran Ellis (Bristol South CC) jumping away from the field and attempting to bridge to Franklin. The move was brought back on the run into Stowey climb but the intensity of the chase had severely split the main field and there was now a select group of riders left for the remaining laps.
Franklin was brought back just after the the 6th ascent of the Stowey Climb, but not before taking some more KOM points that would eventually secure him winning that competition overall.
April 6, 2016 - Bristol South Road Race 13 March 2016 -
After all this activity there was a lull in the group which was taken advantage of by Kieran Ellis, who attacked again on the drag up out of Clutton and opened a decent gap, followed by Matt Franklin who successfully bridged before the fast decent on the A37.
The pair then stayed away for the remaining 2 laps of the Stowey loop, building almost a minutes gap. But with the finish approaching and some strong riders remaining in the chase group, the pair were eventually reeled in with around 5km to go.
A textbook counter attack by Stefan Barnett (DRK Racing) saw him quickly open small gap on the group and with the impetuous to chase all but gone he was then able to hold on through the fast flat run in to the finish take a fine solo win. The remaining places were settled via a very depleted bunch finish with Kieran Ellis (Bristol South CC) ad Rob Borek (DRK Racing) taking 2nd and 3rd for the podium finish.

Andy Legge has kindly chosen April's version- (aptly) open for business on Fools Day...
March 6, 2016 - Strava Comp. update -
|An action packed month - great to see our highest ever number of participants: 32 - (almost 1 in 2 of our Strava Club). Let's aim for a majority next month?
Chris chose the segment; rode it first; and was fastest for quite some time.
Then Glyndwr Griffiths took it upon himself to illustrate the difference between National Level climbers and Strava segmenteers with a scorching 2:18. His ride description "Now back to proper training" presumably refers to his preparation for March's segment.....
Claire Greenfield was the fastest lady - although Christina gave her a good run - excellent to see several ladies giving it a go again.
Kieran Ellis has kindly chosen March's segment - he's gone for the much longer Hyatts Wood Road. The prologues are over... this is as "Grand Tour" as this competition gets.
Bonus point as always for first rider.
February 16, 2016 - Strava Comp. update -
The Monthly Segment Challenge has truly kicked off.
25 members have ridden it already - so we're on course for a PB.
Chris has set a very strong time for the men (and was first rider); and Christina currently has the fastest for the ladies.
Having ridden it, I can confirm that it's a real challenge - come and join the brave band of riders who have tried it if you haven't already.
I don't know what you were doing on 12th June 2012.... but Glyndwr Griffiths was setting a lightning quick KOM up this segment... is he going to defend his KOM after all that warm weather training?!
February 1, 2016 - Strava Comp. update -
Januarys segment draws to a close. It has been a tough month of weather - I dont think anyone enjoyed a tailwind... and many rode in the rain.
We have a new mens KOM - Jamie Stevens pipping Chris to the post. Both recorded 1.52 but Jamie rode his time first. Claire Greenfield got the QOM, but great to see the ladies turning out in numbers this month... long may that continue.
Jo Knight was first rider to ascend.
29 members rode in January - a new PB for us to collectively beat.
Chris has chosen Februarys segment.... he has gone for Naish Hill (a particular nemesis of mine...)
You've got to be brave to ride it at all - but hope you all give it a go. Starts tomorrow - bonus point as ever for first rider.

April 11, 2011 - The Elinith (305km, 5000m climbing) -
Graham Gordon took part in the The Elinith Audax: taking in the terrifying mountain road from Beulah to Tregaron, including Devil’s Staircase - half a mile of 25%. After Tregaron, it was the less arduous mountain road back east to Rhayader. The last 100km was ‘undulating’ rather than ‘insanely mountainous’ allowing brief respite before a final fill up near Leaminster; finishing at 2245. Total: 344km, good prep for the classic league. Chapeau indeed.
April 11, 2011 - Pittards Road Race -
By all accounts, not going home in an ambulance seemed a good outcome from a crashy race with some poor riding. Steve Green had a dig off the front on the climb on the last lap, but didnt make it stick. It all came down to a bunch finish - SG was delayed by the now seemingly inevitable crash 2 miles out, Ed avoided that one but was delayed by a bigger crash in the last 200m. Chapeau to the survivors, and to Steve who rode to Holyhead last week with only a saddlebag for company.

Great to see so many people racing and thanks to Jim and Rob for organising. Results here |
